The Founder of the Academy
Š. Marčiulionis was born in 1964, June 13th, in Kaunas. He started school, as well as tennis practices at age of six. In 1974, Šarūnas started practicing basketball, his first coach was – J.Fiodorovas. A year and a half later, he continued his training in a group of O. Butautienė. Since 1981, Š.Marčiulionis played in „Statyba“ team in Vilnius, and was selected a captain. In 1982 was his first debut in the league of the former USSR, and since 1983 Šarūnas was a candidate for the national team of USSR. In 1989-1997 Š.Marčiulionis was a player in the NBA. He also competed for the Lithuanian national team in 1992, in Barcelona Olympic games, 1995 – European championship and 1996 – Atlanta Olympic games.
Š. Marčiulionis is one of the best Lithuanian basketball players of all time. He was a first player to go to the NBA from the Soviet Union, and one of the first European players to enter the NBA. Šarūnas is a cavalier of the 1st, 3rd and 4th Order of Vytautas the Great, and Order of the Badge of Honour.
Children: Daughter Kristė was born in 1987, son Augustas, born in 2002, and daughter Urtė – born in 2005.
